First initiated by Irish adventurer and explorer Damien Browne in 2019, Freezbrury requires participants to spend a minute longer in the Atlantic Ocean for each day of February. The premise of Freezbrury is to focus of the power of the mind over the body, that the seemingly impossible can become possible. Being in the cold Atlantic Ocean each day for a prolonged time tests the very extremes of your mentality. It has shown us that although some days you may struggle and feel out of your depth that with the right support around you, that you can conquer anything.

Half way through the challenge in 2019, four friends and I decided to use the project as a means for raising money for Irish mental health and suicide awareness charity, Pieta House. Along with Damien we managed to raise €7,500.

The beginnings of the freezbrury movement

In 2020, Freezbrury took on new legs and became an international movement. I was tased with promoting and marketing the project. We managed to raise close to €40,000 for mental health awareness.

The Freezbrury logo takes inspiration from an iceberg. Like an iceberg under the water, each of us has a hidden inner world that others rarely see. What goes on beneath the rough seas is often complex and overwhelming, but solitary. We aim to change that, and to support others who do too. Freezbrury may be a swimming challenge on the surface, but it’s whole is a way for us to explore and share these parts of ourselves, while feeling the support of our community around us. The semi colon in the first letter stands for a well known suicide prevention movement. It represents a pause; a place where the sentence could have ended but was able to carry on.
